Summary
For decades, thousands of individuals—many never diagnosed with any mental illness—were forcibly admitted to the sprawling hospice in Barbacena, a city in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Behind its towering walls, they were subjected to unspeakable horrors: torture, sexual violence, and even murder. Forgotten by society and abandoned by the system, their suffering went unnoticed, their fates ignored. In the 1960s and 70s, courageous journalists exposed fragments of this grim reality through powerful reports. Yet none—until now—managed to unveil the full extent of the tragedy. Daniela Arbex has done what others could not: she has given voice to the silenced. Sixty thousand souls perished within those haunting halls. A few, against all odds, survived. And through their testimonies, a harrowing chapter in history is finally coming to light—a dark and devastating legacy of the Colônia Hospital, where madness was not confined to the patients, but embedded in the very institution itself.
